  • Review of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra playing Mahler and mais le corps taché d'ombres, by Mischa Spel (nrc, 30 May 2021)

[it's] an ingenious, dark, and claustrophobic piece, with ominous strings and a thorny
                          role for the harp.

HE COMPOSES AS IF FREUD HAD AN ELECTRON MICROSCOPE THAT LAYS BARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURES IN THE
                          SLEAZIEST OF DESIRES.

The orchestra piece unfolds as an exuberant sonic oasis in which microtones and recognizable tonality
                          intertwine.

'The music becomes the property of the musicians, and I find myself in an almost passive role. That process,
that tension is the most fun. Magical, even: the human energy materialising a score.'

RICK VAN VELDHUIZEN REALLY PUSHED HÄNDELS 'VENTI, TURBINI' OVER THE EDGE, WHICH, PERFORMED BY POLLY LEECH,
                         ELICITS GOOSEBUMPS.

'Ons gewerd een liefdeloos samenraapsel van beroerde bewerkingen (de een nog platter dan de ander) c.q. verminkingen
                          van bestaande werken en werkjes.'

(left in Dutch because of the unrelenting eloquence of the author, who granted the production 0,5 stars)

  • Action Painting - review of Nederlands Studenten Orkest by Bas van Putten (De Groene Amsterdammer)

A VIVID, EXUBERANT SCORE WHICH TEMPTINGLY INVITES FURTHER EXPLORATION OF ITS COMPOSER

In the new, daring and succesful piece by rick van veldhuizen, both [manoj kamps and katharine dain] also
                        were in excellent form

in boisterous and sometimes bombastic lyrics the work sang of sexuality beyond the norm, in a kind of
theatrical courtship between the orchestra and soprano dain. van veldhuizens timbral imagination was
exceptional, with a trio for basin, chains and water as its zenith.
