Venti, turbini (after G.F. Handel)

2020 | 3' | mezzo-soprano and chamber orchestra

In the summer of 2020, conductor Manoj Kamps and director Lisenka Heijboer-Castañon approached me about contributing to fill the unfortunately empty space the covid-19 pandemic left at the Dutch National Opera. They intended for the evening to be filled with abundance - a cornucopia of distinct voices re-imagining the canon. My assignment was to take Händels 'Venti, turbini', a whirling aria of revenge, and transform it (in any way deemed necessary).

This was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had, and the result is one that takes the Händel and initially runs with it, but ends up as a life-affirming schlager one might hear in a Paris drag bar.

Rick van Veldhuizen really pushed Händels 'Venti, turbini' over the
edge, which, performed by Polly Leech, elicits goosebumps.
